The rats In the Sultan's -palace scene play a prominent part In Dick Whittineton's fortunes, and as. the Solax studio cat had long before de pleted Fort Lee of its rodents,, Mme. Biache appealed . to a licensed New York rat-catcher, for assistance. Tho .rat-catcher, who. inei-. dentally lias traps set . along all' the East. River wharves, brought 212 rats to the Solax studio on his first visit. . . , '.'Gpy the Blood," as the Solax, cat. Is known .to- the- members of, the stock company, dis posed of 14 rats in one batch, but rriost of the action took place outside the range of the camera man's lens, so that the rat-killing episode had to be repeated. A dozen more rats were released. "Gyp" tho Blood" again did . nobly. Three actual; finish fights were caught by tho camera. An other, dozen were released. The camera man. filmed two death-bed scenes. Again the trap was opened, but Gyp jumped Into the cage before it cojild be shut.. . ... , . The, , out-rushing rats . and .the', in-rushing cat caused, the cage .door to jamb, so that it couldn't be closed.'' As a .result the eri-1 tire 170-odd rats scrambled out on tho studio floor,, with "Gyp the Blood" hot on their re spective trails and tails. . Such screaming, such riljouting, such climbing of step-ladders, was rie-'yer seen before in any moving picture studio. ' "Gyp -the Blood," however, paid no attention to, the hysterical actresses/ arid en gaged In battle? royal. / For one . half-hour he fought, snapping here, cuffing there, and pouncing every where- Meanwhile, says the New York "World," foot after foot of "live stuff" was reeled, off by the camera operator, and when the last of the 208 rats (four escaped) lay stretched in rigor mortis on the floor of the studio.
